I like to explain it like this: If you are taking the pill, for it to be effective at contraception, you must take a dose every day. If you miss taking even one dose, it’s recommended you use alternative contraception for the remainder of your cycle as there is a chance of becoming pregnant.
With that in mind, there is no prescribed method for going off the pill to get pregnant. It is simply a matter of stopping the contraceptive. If you are aiming to get pregnant, it doesn’t matter where in the monthly cycle you are when you stop taking them.
Other reversible methods of contraception such as the IUD or contraceptive implants are long-lasting “set and forget” contraceptives that are implanted inside the body. The IUD or implant can be easily removed in our practice when you want to start your family, and your fertility should rapidly return.
There are no side effects of stopping the pill or other methods of contraception after prolonged use.
Tubal ligation and vasectomy are considered a permanent method of contraception. While both can sometimes be reversed, the chances of falling pregnant are low, but there are other options including IVF. Dr Flynn is happy to discuss this with you.
